It’s no secret that the road to becoming a world-class wine expert is often a difficult one for women.

On Wednesday, May 12th, members of the Women for WineSense , a California-based nonprofit organization that promotes diversity in winemaking and viticulture, will host a roundtable discussion with Jancis Robinson MW – a leading wine critic, wine-trade journalist, wine educator, and Master of Wine. The event will be hosted by 3 of WineSense’s members: Marie, Priya, and Diane at their home in Oakland, CA. There are currently no comments for this entry. NAPA / SONOMA, CALIFORNIA |5 May 2021: Wednesday the 12th. On May 20, 2021, from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. in Napa | Sonoma, the Women for WineSense (WWS) Winemaking & Viticultural Roundtable will host a live conversation from London with one of the wine world’s most well-known and influential writers and critics, the legendary Jancis Robinson MW.

ON THETHING: Jancis Robinson will share her stories and insights on overcoming obstacles, teaching and inspiring new generations of wine professionals, education in the industry, the process and evolution of her work, reflections specific to this audience of wine and enology professionals, and much more.  His career spans over forty years and his passion for teaching and wine is infectious.  You don’t want to miss this intimate conversation.

The unrecorded event will be broadcast live with closed links to the Zoom recording for active roundtable members.  The field entrance will be open at 8:45am.  At 9:00 a.m., the roundtable leaders will make brief announcements and introduce themselves, followed by a lively discussion with Ms. Robinson.  Interactive questions and answers are welcome via a chat feature with the event moderators.  Participants may also submit their questions in advance by e-mail or via the link provided in the invitation.

ON THE SPEAKER  Jancis Robinson is regularly cited as one of the most well-known and respected writers and critics in the wine world.  She writes daily for JancisRobinson.com and weekly for the Financial Times.  She began her career in wine in 1976 as editor of the British magazine Wine and Spirit, became the first outsider to pass the Master of Wine (MW) exam in 1984 and has subsequently contributed to numerous publications, networks and projects, including Wine Spectator, the BBC and British Airways.  She tirelessly researches, writes and guides wine lovers and professionals through the ever-changing landscape of the wine industry.

His publications have won numerous awards and are considered benchmarks in the industry, including The Oxford Companion to Wine, The World Atlas of Wine with Hugh Johnson, The Wine Grape with Julia Harding and Jose Vuillamos, American Wine with Linda Murphy and The 24 Hour Wine Expert, to name a few.  An award-winning television presenter, she is invited to wine events around the world and has the privilege of advising Her Majesty the Queen of England in her wine cellar.  She has received international recognition for her contributions to wine and food, including six James Beard Awards and Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), among many other of the world’s most prestigious awards.  For more information about their work, their team, what they believe in and their many accomplishments, visit JancisRobinson.com.

In her own words, Mrs Robinson loves and experiences wine in all its wonderful variety, preferring balance and finesse to mass. She lives in London with her husband Nick Lander, a food and restaurant writer, and has three children and two grandchildren.  For the rest, she says, my other activities are eating, drinking, talking and listening.

ON MODERATORS  Longtime WWS members Marisa Taylor, head winemaker of Rutherford Hill, and Elizabeth Vianna, CEO and head winemaker of Chimney Rock, will moderate the Q&A.  Her years of experience on this unique professional panel and her deep admiration for Robinson’s work and creative abilities will contribute to a lively and inspiring conversation.

ON THE ROUND TABLE ON VITICULTURE AND WINEMAKINGThe WWS Roundtable meets approximately six times a year, with a break for harvest.  During the pandemic, the events have gone online and will continue with more celebrations at participating wineries, with a virtual element once it is safe to bring large groups together.

Ms. Lamgeir notes: The themes of our recent meetings were the professional skills and knowledge that winemakers need, but which are not always easy to acquire in their daily work.

She went on to explain: The programs, which took place from spring 2020 through the pandemic at top wineries in Napa and Sonoma, were a fantastic opportunity for the more than 100 participating women winemakers and grape growers to connect directly with experts they might not otherwise have met for personal advice and to ask questions in a friendly professional forum.  Our speakers include many of the world’s leading writers, critics and editors, leading academics, international sensory consultants, sommeliers, media coaches, CFOs and CEOs in roundtable discussions, international wine and viticulture colleagues, industry career coaches and top recruiters.

ON OTHER WWS ROUNDTABLES  The eight active WWS roundtables provide a welcoming and confidential atmosphere for bi-monthly or quarterly meetings among small groups of colleagues. Club members network, give each other advice and support, and organize educational events by inviting speakers in their field to discuss current issues that club members face in their daily work. Numerous roundtable discussions were held for wine industry representatives on the topics of finance, accounting, human resources, winemaking/wine growing and marketing/consumerism.

The Napa/Sonoma Chapter currently has over 400 members, 80% of whom are wine professionals.
