No one should take away the joy of drinking wine. For decades, however, this joy was considered an anathema for people with diabetes because of their illness. Alcohol consumption has long been considered harmful to the health of people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The reason for this is their effect on blood sugar levels and the alleged increased risk of heart disease. But is that so? Do most diabetics withdraw their wine?

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic disease caused by abnormal blood sugar levels in the body. Insulin helps convert blood sugar levels into energy that can be used for daily functioning. But diabetics’ immune systems make mistakes in insulin-producing cells for pathogenic viruses.

People with type 1 diabetes (T1D) do not produce insulin at all. That’s why they have to administer the medication several times a day. Conversely, type 2 diabetics (T2D) produce insulin, but their bodies cannot use it. These people have developed resistance to this substance, although insulin production is still quite low. About 90% of diabetics in the United States suffer from T2DM, making it much more common than T1DM. More than 30 million American citizens suffer from both forms.

The exact cause of each of these diseases is still unknown. We don’t know why the immune system of people with type 1 diabetes mellitus attacks native cells or why some people have insulin resistance and others do not. What we do know is that certain indicators increase the risk of both forms of diabetes. T1D cannot be prevented because it is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. However, the risk of T2D infection can be reduced if you keep your weight under control, eat a healthy diet and, as recent studies have shown, drink moderate amounts of wine.

What is moderate consumption?

If you’ve seen these two words used with wine, they can seem relatively vague and subjective. However, there is a clear definition of what is considered moderate alcohol consumption. This term refers to the consumption of one glass of wine a day for women and two glasses for men. However, the amount of liquid in a glass of wine depends on the alcohol content of the bottle. The average alcohol percentage per bottle is 11.5 to 12%. Assuming you have the same ABV in your bottle, there should not be more than 5 ounces of liquid in a single glass. More ABV means less fluid and vice versa.

Does wine increase the risk of diabetes?.

Contrary to popular belief, drinking wine in moderate amounts lowers blood sugar instead of increasing it. That is why the main problem with alcohol consumption in general is the prevention of a too low drop in these indicators, which could lead to death.

However, excessive consumption increases the risk of diabetes and not only lowers blood sugar levels. Heavy alcohol consumption has been associated with chronic pancreatitis, and diabetes is a clear consequence of this disease. It also affects insulin’s ability to convert blood sugar into energy, causing a dangerous increase in your body.

If you have been medically examined and are allowed to drink alcohol, there are four basic precautions you can take to prevent problems

First, and perhaps most importantly, never drink on an empty stomach. This leads to a faster absorption of alcohol, which reduces the blood sugar level to an unhealthy level.

Second, make sure you’re moist all night.

If you have diabetes and are worried about the effects of alcohol on your blood sugar level, wine is a good choice and healthier than other forms of alcohol. In order to avoid negative effects, two things in particular have to be taken into account. If you take the necessary precautions, such as not drinking on an empty stomach, staying hydrated, keeping an eye on your blood sugar level and everything should go well.

You should also limit your consumption to one or two glasses of wine a day. However, compliance with these rules does not only guarantee safety, because the use of wine has many positive aspects. Wine contains many antioxidants that can prevent some serious diseases such as coronary heart disease and others, but it’s always good to have more reasons to drink wine.
