Well-known California wine producer Wilson Daniels has announced plans to release the 2020 vintage of its Commanderie de Peyrassol red wine. A blend of four different grape varietals, Commanderie de Peyrassol is made from a long-standing French variety called Tibouren, which is rarely used in vineyards these days. Daniels asserts that the quality of the wine’s flavor and finesse are a result of the Tibouren’s rarity, saying “There’s no such thing as a bad Tibouren. [Tibouren vines are] small and more susceptible to rot, so you don’t see it much anymore, but it’s such a delicious grape!

The Commanderie de Peyrassol is one of the most storied wineries in Provence. Its reputation is built on the Wilson Daniels family’s decades-long commitment to crafting the finest wines in the region, from the finest grapes in the world. Today, as then, the Daniels family grows their grapes by hand to ensure the highest quality. But that’s not all: each vintage is individually crafted to bring out the best of every single grape, and only the finest wines are bottled.

21. April 2021 (New York, NY) – Wine importer Wilson Daniels is pleased to announce the release of 2020 Commanderie de Peyrassol, a historic Côte de Provence vintage that now serves as the benchmark for the region’s most exceptional terroir rosé.

Our relationship with Peyrassol is just beginning, but the Ostroy family has already established itself as an incredible partner that shares the same values as the Wilson Daniels team, said Rocco Lombardo, President of Wilson Daniels. Philippe and his team of experts pay tribute to the domain’s rich wine heritage, its legacy of hospitality and its unique terroir in every bottle they produce. This level of care and precision is on full display in the 2020 vintage, and we look forward to sharing the new pink varieties with the U.S. market.

In the 13th district. Founded by the Knights Templar in the 16th century, the 1,000-hectare estate on the northern slopes of the Massif des Maures has been producing distinctive, dynamic wines that embody the iconic terroir of Provence for more than 800 years.

The 2020 growing season began in the spring with steady rains followed by intense summer heat. However, the temperature variations between cool nights and warm days have helped the grapes achieve balanced acidity and we were able to harvest a full week earlier than last year, says Philippe Ostruy, owner of Peyrassol. We are incredibly proud of our 2020 cohorts. They have a certain ripeness that makes you linger at the glass and dwell on the elegance of a truly expressive Provençal rosé.

Quality controls, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, are extensive and necessary to achieve the highest level of Provençal rosé. The 95 acres of pristine vineyards are farmed organically throughout the growing season, with the team paying particular attention to each plot of vineyard. All the fruit is picked at night to preserve its freshness and vinification is carried out according to the traditional principle of gravity. This meticulous care and conscious reduction of human intervention results in an elegant, mineral-rich and perfectly balanced rosé.

The 2020 vintage will include the Commanderie’s full range of rosé wines: Croix de Peyrassol ($17), Réserve des Templiers ($21), flagship wine Cuvée des Commandeurs ($25), Château Peyrassol ($40) and Clos Peyrassol ($74).
