For those unfamiliar with the DOC Maremma Toscana, it is a wine region located in southern Tuscany, Italy. The DOC Maremma Toscana is made up of several smaller areas including the Bolgheri DOC, which is one of the most popular wine regions in Italy. The DOC Maremma Toscana has a very diverse set of wine styles, ranging from fresh, crisp, and dry white wines to full bodied reds. These styles are produced by a very diverse set of grapes grown throughout the region, which include Vermentino, Sangiovese, Canaiolo, and Ciliegiolo.

When you think of Tuscan wines, chances are that Chianti is the first that springs to mind. Though the region is known as a stronghold for Sangiovese, there are plenty of other wines produced in the region—including those made from the white grape Vermentino. Vermentino has been grown in Tuscany for hundreds of years, but it wasn’t until recently that it began to be recognized as worthy grape in its own right. Today, quality Vermentino are produced in both Tuscany and Sardinia, and it’s not hard to see why: it’s a versatile grape that is equally at home with food or on its own. (And some winemakers say that Vermentino is easier to grow

The Consorzio Tutela Vini della Maremma Toscana is continuing its project to promote Vermentino, which has become the most bottled grape variety in the region for the first time in 2020.

The wine is growing at home and abroad and the Vermentino is a driving force behind the growth of the Maremma Toscana DOC.

From 28. April to the 17th. The second edition of the blind tasting of the Vermentino Grand Prix, organized by the Consorzio Tutela Vini della Maremma Toscana, took place on April 4. I am more convinced than ever that our Vermentino Maremma Toscana DOC can not only take its place among the great white wines of the world, but can also compete with the great Tuscan reds and become one of the main cornerstones of our appellation, confirms Francesco Mazzei, president of the Consortium, who has been interested in this variety for years. It is a very versatile grape variety, suitable for the production of both young and mature wines. If we add to this a still virgin and very varied territory, stretching from the coastal area to the Colline Metallifere and Mount Amiata, and the possibility for winemakers and producers to mix grapes from different areas in the cellars, this guarantees a continuous improvement in the quality of the wines, with an excellent appeal to the consumer, continues Mazzei.

In 2021, 832 hectares produced Vermentino (compared to 138 in 2006, a jump from 2.2% to 9.5%). Vermentino is the main white grape variety grown in the province of Grosseto and accounts for over 50% of the Vermentino produced in all of Tuscany. In 2020, this variety accounted for one third of the total harvest of DOC Maremma Toscana, with a production of 1,722,400 bottles. As a result, the Vermentino Maremma Toscana DOC has become the most bottled variety (30% of the total) of the Maremma Toscana DOC, even surpassing the red varieties (28%).

The tasting panel for the Vermentino Grand Prix was made up of industry experts and starred restaurateurs from the Maremma region of Tuscany, as it is very important to join forces and create synergies to launch the multi-faceted Maremma brand.

The 67 wines in competition were distinguished by the growing region, the winemaking methods used and the vintage. Like last year, the awards went to 100% Vermentino wines and some of the ripest wines from the previous year, although they were in the minority. As the quality continues to improve, the joint efforts of the growers for this variety are greatly appreciated and we must move forward with a clear goal to ensure the success of our appellation, Mazzei concluded. The inclusion of Vermentino Superiore in the discipline was decided at a recent meeting of the Consortium members to allow for wines with more remarkable structure, complexity and longevity, the result of a particular selection and vinification process. Not surprisingly, the Vermentino Superiore was released a year later.
