Bordeaux is home to some of the world’s finest wines, and it has been for centuries. The city of Bordeaux consists of a hilly area at the foot of the Pyrenees known as the “Inland Bordeaux”, along with the lower-lying “Upper Bordeaux” on the Atlantic coast. In the 19th century, the former was dominated by vignerons who found it advantageous to sell their grapes to the larger wine-producing cities of Bordeaux and Paris, which at the time were the only buyers. The result was a shortage of grapes.

This morning, we are excited to announce that on May 23, 2018, the winery will be releasing a new, limited edition cuvée, which celebrates the 300th year of winemaking at Château Ducru-Beaucaillou. This special label will be available to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the winery, and will be available only for 30 days (until midnight on June 30, 2018).

On November 30, the world’s oldest wine producer, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, celebrated its 300th anniversary. The history of the winery started in 1568 with the construction of the first vines. By 1789, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou’s wine was the preferred wine of the king himself. In 1872, the Château purchased the land on which we stand and constructed a new winery.

The creation of a short-lived label for the 100th anniversary of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou was an event in itself for us. It is inspired by a kind of poetic rebirth of the iconic Ducru-Beaucaillou label, which has remained unchanged since its creation by the Johnstons in 1870. The new design recalls the main artistic and technical movements of the 20th century. It’s the place to be in the 21st century: abstract art, collage, destructive forms and new realism, says owner Bruno-Eugène Bory, a contemporary art enthusiast. The Ducru-Beaucaillou 2020 will also have a sophisticated and modern logo, in enameled orange letters on the neck of the bottle, which will be embossed with orange wax, the color of the domain’s signature, along with the château’s logo. 300 years of inspiration for this rising star Since 1720, six families have formed an indissoluble bond with Ducru-Beaucaillou: Dejean, Bergeron, Ducru, Johnston, Desbarats de Bourque or Bory. Thanks to its privileged terroir with the gravelly soil of the Gunzian, which rises at the mouth of the Gironde, the majestic Château Ducru-Bocaille has historically been one of the most revered Châteaux of Bordeaux. This Saint-Julien Grand Cru has been in the Bory family for nearly 80 years. Bruno-Eugène is the third generation at the helm since 2003 and improves the quality of each harvest through his commitment to excellence and his visionary approach. Today the castle is considered one of the most beautiful in Bordeaux. A new and brilliant technological duo for the new era and the year 2020 With the arrival of a new technical team in 2016 (led by Emmanuel Bonneau) and the addition of a research and development/quality department in 2019 (led by Cécile Dupuis) for the 2020 vintage, Ducru-Beaucaillou has clearly entered a new era, with wines that confirm the refined and unique style of the Château, but with even more purity, precision, fullness and depth. Perfectly ripe fruit combined with a highly motivated and skilled technical team and a visionary chef made for exceptional wines for a ter- age vintage. The wines of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou will be sold en primeur through the wine trade in the US starting this month. Due to the small harvests and the careful selection of the best fruit, the quantity of grapes is extremely limited. The wines will carefully mature in barrels in the château’s cellars for an exceptional 18 months and will be ready for delivery in spring 2023.
