Ted Henry has accomplished something few winemakers ever have: He’s taken an obscure little farm on the Central Coast and turned it into a world class wine producer. And he’s done it without a major label deal.

Ted Henry “enjoys” wine, which makes him an excellent fit to the Groth family. Ted joined Groth Vineyards in 2011 as a vineyard worker, and later became assistant winemaker. At the time, Ted had no wine-making experience, and his goal was to learn as much as he could. His hard work paid off. He now oversees the winemaking, sourcing grapes, and helping with viticulture.

Groth Wines is pleased to announce that Ted Henry, Ph.D., is joining the Groth family as the company’s new Director of Winegrowing. Hired to develop the company’s winegrowing program, Ted brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience with viticulture and winemaking, and we are confident that his knowledge and expertise will help Groth in the future. Most recently, he has served as the director of viticulture and winegrowing at Sonoma-Cutrer, a viticultural consulting firm located in the Napa Valley.. Ted-Henry-Joins-Groth-as-Director-of-WinegrowingOAKVILLE, NAPA VALLEY, Calif. (July 6, 2021) — Ted Henry has been named Director of  Winegrowing at Groth Vineyards & Winery in Oakville, Napa Valley. Henry comes to Groth from Clos  du Val, where he served for over five years, most recently as Director of Winemaking. Prior to that he  was Winemaker at Jarvis Estate, where he worked closely with renowned winemaking consultant Dmitri  Tchelistcheff. 

Henry will supervise every stage of the winemaking process at Groth, from cultivating the grapes to bottling the wines, as Director of Winegrowing. This position, created by then-Winemaker Michael Weis in 2014, represents the Groth family’s belief that excellent wines start in the vineyard.  

President and CEO Suzanne Groth stated, “Ted shares our family’s belief that the excellence of our wines is created on our vineyard estates and those of our respected grower partners.” “His enthusiasm for single-vineyard and estate wines, as well as his understanding of organic farming and how it enhances wine quality, will contribute to Groth’s goal of incrementally enhancing our distinctive wines of place via incremental improvements in farming and winemaking,” says Groth. 

After graduating from the University of California, Davis with a bachelor’s degree in fermentation science, Henry started his winemaking career at Trinchero Family Estates in 1999. Henry worked as an enologist, assistant winemaker, and eventually associate winemaker as part of a team committed to the successful launch of Trinchero’s premium wine program. He then went to Artesa Winery and Vineyards, where he was in charge of winemaking at the renowned Ridgeline Vineyard. Henry established a reputation for producing wonderfully balanced, vineyard-driven wines after joining Jarvis Estate as Winemaker in 2008. At Clos du Val, he continued his work with estate-grown wines.
