Bordeaux has the wind in its sails. The 2020 vintage is the third in a trilogy of banner years. While the 2018 wines were massive and high in alcohol and 2019 more austere, 2020 is the year Bordeaux returns to classicism.

The 2020 wines have beautiful fruit, tannins that float through the wine and bright acidity. It was surprisingly easy to enjoy the 200+ wines I tasted for this year’s En Primeur. The wine has no hard tannins and an impressively soft finish. And yet, in addition to beautiful fruit and great acidity, it has structure, density and great promise for the future.

It’s a great year, with a freshness we didn’t expect after this year’s weather conditions, says Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy, director of the Château Mouton-Rothschild estate in Poyac.

The climate in Bordeaux was difficult during the 2020 growing season. A mild, wet spring meant that nothing worked in mid-March because of the new coronavirus pandemic. This pushed the buds forward, on which the fungus formed.

This was followed by over 50 days without rain in the summer. The drought, which does not occur in Bordeaux’ maritime climate, has reduced the size of the berries and thickened the skin of the grapes.

Then the isolated August thunderstorms only boosted the grapes. The grapes were very productive from the start. Most of the grapes were harvested in September and the rains came in October.

Although the winemakers expected a small amount of juice to contain a lot of tannin and alcohol, they were surprised that it was quite fresh and had balanced acidity. The alcohol content is back to the more typical levels of 13.5% and 14% of past decades.

The aromas are very open and the tannins are velvety, but thanks to the dry summer, the wines are concentrated, ripe but not cooked, says Pierre-Olivier Clouet, technical director of Château Cheval-Blanc in Saint-Emilion.

This coolness is due to the cool summer nights and the moisture left in the soil after the wet spring.

On the other hand, the number of products is below average, continuing the trend of recent years. Moreover, it is not a uniform vintage. Some areas, appellations and grape varieties did much better than others.

Some of the best wines are made from Merlot and Cabernet Franc in Saint-Emilion and from Cabernet Sauvignon in Pauillac and Saint Estefe. In Margot and Pessac-Léognan, things are more ambiguous. The Sauternes appear to have lost yield and intensity, although attractive, light wines were produced. The dry white wines of Sauternes and Pessac-Léognan are both balanced and rich.

Some areas, appellations and grape varieties did much better than others.

Like the 2019 vintage tasting last year, the 2020 vintage tasting took place under unusual circumstances. Due to sales restrictions, few commentators and buyers were able to make the traditional trip to Bordeaux to taste at the chateau. Instead, samples were sent directly to a few people and tastings were held in 10 cities around the world. Since I live near Bordeaux, I had the opportunity to taste samples at home, many of which were delivered the day after they came out of the barrel, and also in Bordeaux itself. My reviews are wine reviews that are fresh and full of character.

The 2020 vintage of Bordeaux is definitely worth buying when the importers release their reports. The prices released so far show an average increase of 10% over 2019, making the wines cheaper and certainly of better quality than 2018.

The wines of 2020 will be more to taste than to admire, as they were in 2018.

This vintage clearly shows that Bordeaux can still produce classic wines, says Eric Kohler, technical director of Château Lafite-Rothschild in Pauillac.

My Top 10 Wines

These are not necessarily the highest rated wines, but they are the ones I liked.

Château Pétrus 2020 Barrel Sample (Pomerol); 98-100 points.Spice and black fruit aromas shine through in this powerful wine. Its dense texture and concentrated fruit are invariably powerful. At the same time, the wine has a refreshing acidity at the end that puts everything on a footing. This is the result of Peter’s work.

Château Angélus 2020 Barrel Sample (Saint-Émilion); 97-99 points. This wine brings together all the best elements of the vintage. It has concentrated tannins, a velvety texture and a persistent intensity of black fruits. The texture is strongly mineral, giving it complexity and finesse on the finish. Clearly, this is a wine to age for a long time.

Château Léoville Barton 2020 Barrel sample (Saint-Julien); 97-99 points. The wine shows both elegance and great richness. It is a balanced and ripe wine, full of impressive black fruit and generous tannins. The fine structure offers considerable long-term potential.

Château Palmer 2020 Barrel Sample (Margaux); 97-99 points. The floral aromas of this wine are combined with generous tannins that are surprisingly powerful. The fruity taste offers a mixture of black and red berries. They have a fine structure and concentration, balanced by a tight acidity. Made from organic and biodynamic grapes.

Château Lafite Rothschild 2020 Barrel Sample (Pauillac); 97-99 points. It is a full-bodied wine in which the layers of fruit and tannins are in perfect harmony. Concentration is easily achieved with a palate that shows both saltiness and impressive blackcurrant fruit. This wine is definitely destined for a long aging.

Château Haut-Bailly 2020 Barrel sample (Pessac-Léognan); 96-98 points. The texture of this wine is exceptional, with powerful black fruit and rich tannins that work together harmoniously. All this density is supported by subtle spiciness and fresh acidity. The result is a wine that has both power and delicacy, giving the finish relief. It will certainly age well.

Château Valandraud 2020 Barrel sample (Saint-Emilion); 96-98 points. This wine from a top vineyard has a serious, dense and strong structure. At the same time, the beautiful blackcurrant fruit, acidity and subtle perfume balance its richness. It is an impressive and memorable wine that will develop well over the years.

Château Cos d’Estournel 2020 Barrel sample (Saint-Estèphe); 96-98 points. The powerful, ripe fruit shows exceptional quality and velvety character combined with a ripe structure. The wine has the freshness that is so characteristic of this vintage, looks open and fruity, but surprises through its density.

Château Ferrière 2020 Barrel sample (Margaux); 94-96 points. The wood touches the wine and supports the tannins. The texture and freshness go well with the pure fruit of the blackcurrant. It is elegant, with a touch of tannin at the end. Made from organic and biodynamic grapes.

Château Lafon-Rochet 2020 Barrel sample (Saint-Estèphe); 93-95 points. Rich in texture, with dark tannins and rich blackberry fruit, this vineyard produced a very good wine in this vintage. Structure is important, but the emphasis remains on fruitiness and excellent acidity. The wine will certainly age well.As promised, here is my En Primeur article as promised.
