Miller Family Wine Company, one of the Pacific Northwest’s most respected sources for premium wine products, has joined forces with Joey Tensley, a renowned wine and food expert, to launch Optik Wines, a new, boutique line of wines. The purpose of the Optik launch is to bring a new, luxurious class of wine to the market. The wines will be produced from premium grapes from the Northwest and will be sold in special edition, elegant packages.

“The Optik wines are not your typical wines,” says Joe Tensley, the designer who created the brand, ” they are inspired by the colors that we see everyday, from the bright hues of the sky and the sunset to the contrast and textures of an urban cityscape. I wanted to capture all of this in a wine bottle and when I was having trouble finding a bottle that was the right size and shape, I decided to create my own.”

Planted in 1973 by brothers Bob and Steve Miller, Bien Nacido Vineyard is widely known as one of California’s most iconic vineyards. It has long been revered for producing exceptional wines that embody the distinctive characteristics of the Santa Maria Valley AVA. In an effort to honor this heritage while presenting the special qualities of the vineyard in a new and unique way, the Miller family partnered with Tensley to create Optik, a brand designed to present a fresh take on Bien Nacido.

Throughout his career, winemaker Tensley has built a reputation for preserving the best qualities of the vineyard by minimizing winemaker manipulation and oak treatment – a signature style that has earned him more than 200 90+ scores in the wine industry’s most respected publications, including six wines on Wine Spectator’s prestigious Top 100 list. Combining the masterful approach of Tansley with the elegant fruitiness of Bien Nacido, Optik aims to open eyes to new possibilities for this long-established winery.

For nearly 50 years, our family has continued the legacy of Bien Nacido as one of California’s most respected wineries, and we are incredibly proud to be the stewards of these lands, says Nicholas Miller, Vice President of Sales and Marketing. However, we are always looking for ways to showcase the diversity and complexity of Bien Nacido and bring it to the attention of new consumers in new ways. Working with Joey, a talented winemaker we always hold in high regard, we knew we could present another piece of Bien Nacido in an unexpected way.

I’ve always felt that the most important part of my role as a winemaker is to reflect the vineyard and the unique qualities of the fruit in the wine, Tensley says. In order to highlight the special characteristics of Bien Nacido, a special place where exceptional fruit grows, I try to adopt a gentler approach in the cellar, where the terroir remains the main protagonist. And working with individual blocks of the vineyard allows me to showcase the diversity of the parcels, resulting in wines with a real sense of individuality.

Optik’s portfolio includes wines from its vineyards, which are located in separate areas of the winery, as well as six small-batch wines of three varieties: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah range in price from $35 to $45. Optik’s unique and modern packaging represents the power of new perspectives and symbolizes the ability of the winemaker’s hand to convey what his eye sees. Our label is designed to bring the visual concept to life by presenting a new interpretation of the Bien Nacido winery through the lens of an incredibly experienced outsider, says Tommy Gaeta, marketing director. They offer a deeper level of story than one would expect from the wines typically produced at Bien Nacido, while the price makes these wines affordable to a wide audience of wine lovers, both novice and experienced.
