One of the most sought-after wines in the world is French Bordeaux wine, Chateau Petrus. The label is so popular, in fact, that it fetches up to $1,000 a bottle. That’s great news for anyone who has one. But what if you don’t? What if you’re just a fan of the classic taste of Chateau Petrus? Well, if you live in Southern California you’re in luck. Beginning July 1, Chateau Petrus will be offered in a restaurant setting at San Ysidro Ranch, a world-class resort and golf club in Rancho Santa Fe.

The most prestigious wine auction in the world, Sotheby’s Hong Kong Wine and Spirits auction, has just closed with the sale of the Château Petrus 1990 vintage for $156,000. This most expensive bottle of wine ever sold at auction was purchased by a collector in the U.K. who wishes to remain anonymous. Chateau Petrus is a Bordeaux First Growth wine from a celebrated Bordeaux producer whose wines have been getting more and more attention in the world of fine wines.

The Stonehouse restaurant at the Santa Barbara Resort is installing a vertical collection of 70 bottles of Chateau Petrus, completing the restoration of a collapsed cellar.

May 10 – (Santa Barbara, CA) – With the arrival of the rare 70-year-old Chateau Petrus vertical collection in the newly renovated Stonehouse Restaurant Cellar at the famed San Ysidro Ranch Resort, the renovation of one of the world’s most celebrated restaurant wine collections is complete. The Petrus Collection at Stonehouse, which has won Wine Spectator’s Grand Prix five times, is the most comprehensive Petrus restaurant offering in the United States.

The 70-bottle Chateau Petrus vertical contains all the bottles produced at the famous Bordeaux estate since the famous 1945 vintage. This collection of rare wines serves as the centerpiece of the Stonehouse Restaurant’s restored wine cellar, whose entire inventory of 12,500 bottles was destroyed by the landslides that hit the complex and restaurant in January 2018.

THE COLLECTION INCLUDES SOME OF THE WORLD’S MOST SOUGHT-AFTER WINES

The restoration of Stonehouse Cellar has been an arduous process that has taken us all over the world. We sought out the rarest and most sought-after wines to make the restaurant’s cellar even better than it was before the 2018 disaster, said Tristan Pitre, Stonehouse’s wine director. Patience and persistence were rewarded when we were finally able to acquire and preserve this historic collection of one of the world’s greatest wines.

The vertical collection of 70 bottles was acquired with the help of The Wine Source from two Bordeaux-based collectors. It covers all the harvests of Chateau Petrus, from the famous Victory harvest of 1945 to the current harvest, including the famous harvest of 1947 and the famous harvests of 1959, 1961, 1964, 1982, 1990, 2000 and 2009.

In purchasing this top-notch Petrus collection, San Ysidro Ranch insisted that its authenticity and provenance were beyond question. On behalf of the Ranch, The Wine Source discovered the wines in Bordeaux, where they slept with the original buyers, who had purchased the bottles directly from the Chateau after they were released. Origin, preservation and authenticity were thus deemed beyond reproach. In total, the two Petrus collections, purchased from Bordeaux sources and comprising a vertical collection of 70 vintages, include 119 bottles, including doubles.

Without question, the Stonehouse Petrus vertical is the largest collection of Petrus in a restaurant in America and one of the largest collections in the world, said Ty Warner, owner of San Ysidro Ranch. Most importantly, the Ranch’s collection represents the hard work and dedication it took to make Stonehouse and its wine program great again after the catastrophic events of 2018.

Rancho San Ysidro is part of the Ty Warner Hotels & Resorts group, founded by entrepreneur Ty Warner. Ty Warner Hotel & Resort properties include:  San Ysidro Ranch, Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara, Four Seasons Hotel New York, Las Ventanas al Paraiso, Montecito Club, Coral Casino Beach and Cabana Club, Sandpiper Golf Course and Rancho San Marcos.
