Chardonnay vineyards in Champagne, France / Alamia

Champagne, France

It’s a shame that there are so many wines in Champagne that we often forget to talk about the place itself. The chalky, snow-white Côte de Blanc is primarily planted with some of the world’s most sought-after Chardonnays. The fact that its rolling hills and small villages are so modest is part of its charm. The sunrises and sunsets over this peaceful landscape are also not to be missed.

Franciacorta, Italy

This amphitheatrical area in northern Italy was formed by the retreat of a glacier. Today, the greenery and soft light give the impression of a place that has had time to settle. Locally grown Chardonnay is often blended with Pinot Nero to produce sparkling wines using the traditional method.

Chardonnay, grown in this rather warm region, is sweet and ripe, yet dry and refreshing. Some common descriptors, from wildflowers to gravel, are also found in the landscape.

Franschhoek, South Africa

This valley is about an hour’s drive from Cape Town and offers beautiful mountain views from three sides. When you’re not looking at the treetops, it’s easy to keep your eyes busy with the flowers growing among the vines. The Méthode Cap Classique sparkling wines, made from locally grown Chardonnay, are equally delicious. The French Huguenots settled here in 1688, hence the name (Afrikaans for French Corner), and much of their original architecture has been preserved, which only adds to its charm.

Margaret River, Australia

In the far south-west of Australia lies one of the country’s coolest growing regions, well suited to the production of quality wines. It’s a place where the morning fog gives way to a clear blue sky and you might see a kangaroo or a flock of sheep pass by.

The rolling hills and tree-lined fields among the vineyards evoke words like heart and attract lovers of hiking, horseback riding and generally strolling.

Napa Valley, CA

Like champagne, Napa’s beautiful surroundings are sometimes overlooked when it comes to the quality of its wines. But there is beauty and brains in this region.

In most places you can see vineyards stretching into the distance. These neat rows are interrupted by a deep blue sky and a golden sun. You can see why the grapes are so happy here. In spring, the bright yellow mustard flowers add to the charm. In addition to their appearance, these plants have other assets: They collect water to help irrigate the vines and prevent erosion.
