(January 12, 2021; Napa, CA) – Dalla Terra Winery Direct® announced today that Vigne Surrau has joined the Italian family-owned company. It is thus the first Sardinian winery to be included in the company’s portfolio since its inception in 1990. Founded in 2004 by the Demuro family, Surrau is located just fifteen minutes from the beautiful Costa Smeralda in the northeast corner of the island, which is also home to Sardinia’s only DOCG: Vermentino di Gallura DOCG. Surrau is the heart of this prestigious appellation and Vermentino di Gallura is considered one of the most important white wines in Italy. The winery is built around Vermentino and 70% of the production in the cellar is dedicated to this grape variety. As a testament to the winery’s dedication to the grape and the region, Surrau produces three bottles of Vermentino di Gallura. In addition to Vermentino, Surrau produces a special selection of red wines from the Cannonau grape variety, as well as several other local varieties of Sardinian red wine. Dalla Terra will be the winery’s sole representative in the United States.

Vigne Surrau is a 149-hectare vineyard located in eight different locations in the eastern part of Gallura. It produces mainly Vermentino and Cannonau, but also Carignano, Caricaggiola and Muristellu (two indigenous Sardinian red varieties). The soil consists of decomposed granite and sand, rich in marine fossils. The winery practices sustainable agriculture, aided by the mistral wind that blows onto the island from the northwest of the Strait of Bonifacio and Corsica, providing the vines with great protection against disease.
Representing Sardinian winemakers has been a goal of Dalla Terra for many years and for me personally since I fell in love with the island decades ago, says Brian Larkey, founder of Dalla Terra Winery Direct. We found a fantastic partner in the Demuro and Surrau family, as they quickly became known in Sardinia and around the world for their deep respect for the land, its heritage and viticulture.
The name Vigne Surrau comes from the Surrau Valley, situated between the municipalities of Arzacena and Palau in northern Sardinia. The Demuro family is originally from Sardinia and has been involved in the region’s viticulture for generations. During his youth, Tino Demuro and his eleven siblings worked in the family vineyards and produced wine for mainly personal consumption. Twenty years later, in 2001, while running a successful construction business, he invested in the potential of the land and purchased vineyards in the community of Arzaken.
After the initial purchase of the vineyard, Tino hired renowned consulting oenologist Beppe Caviola and assembled a young and talented team consisting of agronomist Fabio Isoni and oenologist Mario Siddi to bring the Surrau vineyard to its full potential. Vinh Surrau was officially established in 2004.
Surrau’s emphasis on harmony between nature and innovation is evident throughout the winery. This is also reflected in the architecture of the basement building itself, which consists of a succession of transparent facades and stone walls that blend harmoniously into the ground. The basement is an open, barrier-free space between the interior and the Gallura landscape.
