Capalino, a leading strategic consulting and government relations firm, and the New York Wine & Grape Foundation have partnered to advance sustainability in New York State’s wine industry. The industry – from growing grapes to selling bottles of wine – generates an annual economic impact of $6.65 billion in New York State.

The NYW&G Foundation promotes New York wines, grape juice and table grapes and sponsors research to improve quality, productivity and sustainability. New York is working toward a sustainable economic future through visionary policies and partnerships. Sustainable winemaking practices are widely recognized as essential to reducing environmental impacts and improving the quality of wine in New York State.

Capalino is working with the Foundation to develop a business plan to launch a national vineyard sustainability certification program. We are excited to help the New York Wine and Grape Foundation launch a statewide sustainable wine program to meet the growing demand for sustainably produced wines in New York City, said Capalino President Travis Terry. This certification is an opportunity to leverage the recent rebranding of the Boldly, NY Foundation while promoting the leadership of its members in the development of farm conservation practices, Terry added. We look forward to using our comprehensive sustainability services and our business strategy, nonprofit management and social impact to make this program a success.

This viticulture sustainability program is important because it emphasizes the sustainable practices that New York’s winemakers are already using, while providing recommendations for moving forward with their sustainability efforts in a consistent manner. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, Genesee Valley Regional Market and a private grant from John Ingle of Ingle Vineyards and Heron Hill Winery.

Capalino’s team brings relevant business and sustainability experience to develop a business plan that will form the basis for launching a statewide sustainable winemaking program. Capalino will work with the Foundation to develop a clear strategic direction, program design and a five-year plan to ensure the program is self-sustaining and sustainable across the state.

This partnership between Capalino and the Foundation to create a sustainability certification program follows Capalino’s previous work to help the Foundation establish export programs to expand the presence of New York wines around the world. The sustainability certification program will help both to protect the environment and to increase the income of winegrowers and wine producers, as consumers are interested in buying organic products and are willing to pay more for them.

The two organizations recently launched a new brand and services to expand their influence in New York State. The NYW&G Foundation launched the rebranding of Boldly, NY for 2019, reflecting the growth of the industry, the Foundation’s approach and New York’s status among other wine regions. Capalino has recently expanded its services as a New York State-focused strategic consulting firm to meet the goals of companies and organizations like NYWGF seeking to expand their business and services in the New York market.

This new initiative is a shining example of how the two organizations are achieving their goals while courageously working together to implement important new sustainability initiatives in New York State.
