Pinot noir is considered a turkey red. Not for nothing. It has everything we’re looking for, and the nuances of red fruit and mushrooms are not overwhelming. Provided you avoid the lighter Pinot de Bourgogne, which can be overwhelmed by the variety of flavors on the plate.

This won’t happen with the 2018 Reata Pinot Noir, which combines grapes from three counties on the California coast that are best known for Pinot Noir.

One criticism is that there is little fruit on the nose, with green notes of pine and stem dominating.

We found the 2018 Reata Pinot Noir to be a bit overdone with the dominant vanilla.

Gamay is often underrated, and it’s easy to make the mistake of thinking that all gamay wines are simple. Too light, even for a turkey.

This is not the case in the 10 Beaujolais crus known to produce more powerful and deeper wines, such as Moulin-a-Vent.

But in this fifth-generation family winery. Generation, this should come as no surprise.

What we like about Muga Prado Enea Gran Reserva Rioja 2011

There is no doubt that this is a new classic from one of Spain’s greatest wineries.

Whereas one would expect a developed nose after 10 years of harvesting, maturing and bottling. But it’s not certain that it will be as full-bodied as the flavors of blackberries, plums, and sweet spices.

They perfectly emphasize the taste, which underlines the exceptionally warm year 2011. Dark berry and plum flavors are back, but now with truffle and balsamic giving some earthiness, and deeper layers of cedar and notes of smoky ash and sweet incense. Deliciously soft tannins and electric acidity provide full development and perfect balance for a long, seductive finish.

What we don’t like about Muga Prado Enea Gran Reserva Rioja 2011

If you’re going to drink now, you have to show remarkable restraint not to. It develops in the bottle over a long period of time. If you don’t have the patience, you should at least decant it if you’re drinking it now, because it also gets better as it sits.

4. Navaerreros Garnacha de Bernabeleva 2018

If you overcooked your turkey and it’s a little dry, the pomegranate is your best friend with its wonderfully concentrated and fattening fruit.

The winery adheres to biodynamic and organic practices, and all work in the vineyards is done by hand.

What we don’t like about Bernabeleva de Navaerrero’s Garnache 2018

If it’s too sour, it’s very delicate, but that’s why we recommend using a drier turkey.

5. Volpaia Chianti Classico Riserva 2017

Main product characteristics

The Sangiovese grape is everything we described above. Especially if you tend to overdo it with the turkey and serve lots of potatoes, stuffing, vegetables and gravy (and let’s face it, who doesn’t?!). A wine with invigorating acidity is more important than ever. A good Chianti Classico is the way to go.

Even better when it comes to a shrine like this Volpai 2017. It has everything you’re looking for and more: a seductive bouquet, rich fruit and good structure with sweet, semi-sweet tannins and, of course, the acidity needed for a nice, long finish.

What we like about the Volpaia Chianti Classico Riserva 2017

It is rich in ripe organic berries and cherries, but is pleasantly supported by fresh lemon and herb notes, as well as a good dose of earthy notes. In addition to the necessary medium to full body, fine tannins and lively acidity.

The 2017 Volpaia Chianti Classico Riserva is also very versatile. Buy more than one bottle (or more than two if you want to drink them both with the turkey!) and it’s great for this crowd. Not only other meats like chicken and lamb, but also many Italian classics like pizza, pasta and risotto.
