What we like about Altesino Brunello di Montalcino 2015
If you’ve ever been to Tuscany, the fruity aromas of black cherries and plums should remind you of the warm, golden Tuscan sun.
It seems thin in the mouth at first glance, but make no mistake about it. It quickly shows a nice depth and a nice width. It contains a wide range of flavors, in harmony and unity.
There’s dirt: wet earth, tobacco, terracotta and cedar. Spicy: Chocolate, vanilla, lavender and violet. And of course the fruit: those red plums, cherries and wild berries.
The pure tannins and lively acidity offer a near perfect balance to accompany rich osso bucco dishes, stews, braised and grilled dishes.
What we don’t like about Altesino Brunello di Montalcino 2015
Compared to a traditional Brunello, it’s not as full-bodied as we thought, with a shorter finish.
We also noticed a slight lethargy for fruit and alcohol on the nose.
Unfortunately, we didn’t have the luxury of waiting a few years.

What we want in Cantina Zaccagnini Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2017
We had forgotten how good this Montepulciano from Abruzzo was until we tasted it again for this magazine. With lots of texture and long steps, it is luxuriously scented.
Juicy but slightly tart notes of blackberries, cherries and plums soaked in brandy emerge first. Next we found notes of dark licorice, balsamic, dark chocolate, vanilla, herbs and spices. The palate is dense with a complexity of leather from all the oak aromas. But with the freshness of the crisp tannins and a marked increase in acidity, the density is almost nil.
Drink with pasta and red sauce, sausages or other grilled meats. This 13% medium to high alcohol red wine is truly an amazing value.
What we don’t like about the Cantina Zaccagnini Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2017
Some drinkers find it thick, syrupy, with one-dimensional cherry notes and an aftertaste of bitter licorice. Although, of course, that’s not the case.
Of course, for all the flavors mentioned, it’s not particularly complex or layered, the oak flavors are perhaps a bit too strong.

3. Avignonesi Vin Santo di Montepulciano 2005

It’s easy to make a mistake! It’s called Montepulciano and actually comes from the town of the same name in Tuscany. And as a white dessert wine, it’s one of the best we’ve ever tasted.
Instead of Montepulciano grapes, only the best varieties of Grechetto, Malvasia Toscana and Trebbiano Toscana are used. They are grown in vineyards located at 290 meters above sea level.
After manual harvest, the grapes are dried and left in a well-ventilated, dark, humidity-controlled room for six months to evaporate excess moisture and increase sugar concentration.
After 10 years of aging in Caratelli, small 50 liter oak barrels, it is aged in the bottle for another 6 months. The result is a deliciously sweet dessert wine with a deep amber color and a rich and complex flavor.

What we like about Avignonesi Vin Santo di Montepulciano 2005
With perfect balance and a long finish, the 2005 Vin Santo di Montepulciano Avignonesi has a heavenly aroma. Filled with notes of dried and candied fruit (prunes, raisins and oranges), combined with the luxury of honey, caramel and chocolate. Even more subtle notes of white tea leaves, cinnamon and vanilla are evident.
Each sip reveals new and surprising flavours: Figs, lemon, almonds and roasted coffee. And the perfect balance of acidity and sweetness gives an elegant, even, sensual finish.
Apart from the drying and maturing process, this Vin Santo owes its special character mainly to La Madre, an ancient yeast that Avignonesi carefully protects.
As a digestif, it is almost flawless, even for connoisseurs and discerning palates. Although you could say we’re neither when we say it’s like a dessert in itself and we want our glasses to be clean!
What we don’t like about Avignonesi Vin Santo di Montepulciano 2005
If you like dessert wines, these are pretty impeccable. Unlike this process, and this quality is not cheap! And of course it is also for the traditional half bottle.

Made from grapes from the estate’s new vineyards in Montepulciano, Tuscany. The woody aging nuances the typical tannins of the young Sangiovese. This process is not a must for Rosso di Montalcino, but it gives this example the complexity of flavor and layers that young Brunellos often lack.

Not only because of the price, this Montalcino wine is more affordable than Brunello d’Altesino, but also because of the food it can accompany perfectly.
We enjoyed our first drink with an appetizer consisting of a variety of richly flavored crostinis and continued with a dish of meat lasagna pasta.
Yes, it was only a medium-sized dish, because this Rosso di Montalcino from Il Poggione, with its blend of dark red fruits and berries, is too good not to be enjoyed with the rich menu. With its mild tannins and firm texture, it is ideal for a traditional Tuscan steak, but it goes equally well with a roast lamb or pork, a hearty meat stew or antipasti with grilled eggplants, peppers and artichokes.
It has just enough of a hint of sweet hazelnut to cut through the deliciously tangy Italian cheeses we’re ready with.
With such versatility and at this price, you’d be crazy to pass up this gorgeous red Sangiovese from the Il Poggione winery in Montepulciano.
What we don’t like about Il Poggione Rosso di Montalcino 2018
Some drinkers may find it a little too spicy for their tastes, and it would be helpful to have it in the basement – or some other convenient place, in case you probably don’t have one! – A few years in the basement.
Il Poggione can also be aged in oak for more than a year.
