Alejandro Fernández is regarded as a wine world innovator and visionary, an eminence in the winemaking business with a career spanning more than 40 years, and was awarded the Gold Medal of Merit in Labor in 2014 for his work on the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin. 

Alejandro-Fernandez-the-Pioneering-Winemaker-and-Initiator-of-Ribera-DelMadrid, 25 May 2021 – Alejandro Fernández, the founder of the famous Pesquera de Duero band Familia Fernández Rivera, died this weekend in Santander at the age of 88. In the community of Castile and León’s group of viticulturists, his death creates a gap that is impossible to replace; he possessed unique winemaking know-how that is only available to a select few.  

Mr. Alejandro Fernández, an icon and the driving force behind Ribera del Duero, started his journey in 1972, when he and his wife, Esperanza Rivera, bought a 16th century stone wine press, where they began to make their first wines. Familia Fernández Rivera had its maiden harvest in 1975. Tinto Pesquera was the name of the wine that was marketed, a homage to Alejandro and Esperanza’s fondness for their hometown of Pesquera de Duero. 

Because of the family’s winemaking, the potential of Ribera del Duero was recognized, and the Designation of Origin was established in 1982. In the same year, Familia Fernández Rivera released the inaugural Janus Pesquera, which was created using exceptional vintages and grapes from Via Alta, Tinto Pesquera’s highest vineyard. In 1985, when American wine expert Robert Parker raised Tinto Pesquera, particularly Janus, to the ranks of the finest wines in the world, calling it the Petrus of Spain, the wines of Bodega Pesquera became one of the most recognized and prized. 

Alejandro continued to add to his winemaking heritage with his wife and children by establishing wineries in various areas: Condado de Haza, also in Ribera del Duero; Dehesa La Granja near Zamora; and El Vnculo, the latter in Ciudad Real’s La Mancha region. In 2011, the company expanded by opening the Hotel AF Pesquera in Peafiel. 

Mr Alejandro Fernández was given one of the Gold Medals of Merit in Labor in 2014 for his work on the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin, one of King Emeritus Juan Carlos I’s final honors. 

The Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin Regulatory Council emphasized his position as the driving force behind the quality brand and the fact that Fernández was the architect of the designation of origin’s global development. “His style of understanding and appreciating Ribera del Duero was handed down down the generations, and he helped our DO develop and gain reputation. In a statement, its president, Enrique Pascual, stated, “He leaves a tremendous influence, admired by critics and highly revered by his colleagues.” 

Familia Fernández Rivera is organized like a corporation, with each division having its own identity and importance. With a presence in more than 70 countries, the Tinto Pesquera, Condado de Haza, Dehesa de la Granja, and El Vnculo wineries, as well as the Hotel AF Pesquera, are the foundations of this group, which aims to continue establishing the gold standard in the Spanish and worldwide wine sectors.
