In addition to managing the winemaking program at Acumen Manor’s vineyards in Edkora and Attelas in the Atlas Mountains, Derr will help oversee the winery’s grape sales program.
NAPA VALLEY, CA – February 9, 2021 – Napa Valley is pleased to announce the appointment of John Derr to the position of vineyard liaison to producers. One of Napa Valley’s most respected winemakers, Mr. Derr runs his own company, John Derr Farming, LLC, and acts as a viticulture consultant for such renowned wineries as Kapcsándy Family Winery, Ilsley Vineyards and Blankiet Vineyards. As Acumen’s winemaker, Derr will work closely with winemaker Phillip Titus and vineyard manager Jesus Gonzalez to oversee the management of 116 acres of CCOF-certified organic vineyards on the heights of Mt. Atlas. Derr will also help Titus oversee the Acumen Farmer Relations program, which focuses on luxury Cabernet Sauvignon de Montagne, Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot from the Attelas and Edcora vineyards.
“Over the past 15 years, I have had the pleasure of working with John on several vineyards, including Altimeter Vineyard, which is adjacent to our own Edcora vineyard on Atlas Peak,” says Titus. “John is one of the best grape producers in the business. His experience growing grapes throughout the Napa Valley and particularly in Atlas Peak makes him the ideal person to work with our own team as we continue our mission to build the best vineyard program in Atlas Peak.” John is also highly respected in the industry, so he will be invaluable to our grower awareness program.”
Since its founding in 2012, Acumen has focused on creating the next great vineyard in the Napa Valley. To achieve this goal, Acumen acquired two coveted vineyards on Atlas Peak in the famous mountains of eastern Napa Valley. Acumen’s vineyards, called Attelas and Edcora, range in elevation from 1,300 to 1,600 feet and are planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon and four other red Bordeaux grape varieties. Originally planted in 1992, the 32-acre Attelas vineyard was the “home winery” of legendary winemaker Dr. Jan Krupp. The Edcore vineyard, which encompasses 84 acres of vines, is located higher on the Atlas Mountains and is the warmer of the two vineyards. Two different grapes from Acumen’s limited production, PEAK Edcora Cabernet Sauvignon, scored 100 points, and grapes from Acumen’s vineyard are regularly purchased by iconic wineries such as Spottswoode and Chappellet. Because of the limited nature of Acumen wines, the winery uses less than 25% of the estate’s fruit to produce Acumen wine.
“Atlas Peak is one of the most exciting areas in the Napa Valley for mountain grown Cabernet Sauvignon,” says Derr. “What Acumen has already accomplished in Atlas Peak is remarkable, and I look forward to working with Philip and Jesus to take Acumen’s wine production to even greater heights. Wineries interested in purchasing grapes from Acumen’s Edcora and Attelas vineyards can contact Acumen at 707.974.1886.
Acumen was founded in 2012 by entrepreneur Eric Yuan with the goal of producing the best estate wines of the Atlas Peak. To achieve this goal, Acumen operates two vineyards – Dekor and Attelas – for a total of 116 acres planted. Using grapes from these certified organic vineyards, Acumen produces a small portfolio of renowned mountain wines, with an emphasis on Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc from Atlas Peak.
